PROGRAMS - 2010 PROGRAM SCHEDULE

Thank you, Rockhurst University, for hosting our 2009 programs at Conway Hall, Room 103.  Our programs are from 7:30am to 9:00am unless otherwise noted.

January 15, 2010 – Characteristics of Different Business Entities – Part 1
Mr. Scott Blakesley, Spencer Fane Britt & Browne, LLP
Our two part series begins with a primer on types of business entities, the differences between those entities, and the liability status associated with each type.  All businesses have “requirements” to establish and run the business. and it is helpful to have a general understanding of these requirements.  Have you wondered who really owns a business?  This session will focus on a basic understanding of terminology that will be helpful in the next session.
We will elect our 2010 slate of officers and new Board members at the beginning of our meeting.

January 20, 2010 – Virtual Seminar – 12:00-1:30pm
Recession-Proof Philanthropy: What’s Ahead in Gift Planning for 2010?
The economic recession has had a profound effect on philanthropic gift planning. New gift planning strategies have arisen to fulfill the needs of donors and charitable organizations in a difficult economic environment. This session will review various gift plans that have been implemented by individuals and organizations in 2009, using case examples for illustration, and will anticipate the plans that may be implemented in the early part of 2010, particularly in light of tax law provisions and some predicted economic recovery.
Neal P. Myerberg, attorney, Myerberg Shain & Associates (M/S/A)

February 19, 2010 – Gifting Business Interests – Part 2
Mr. Scott Blakesley, Spencer Fane Britt & Browne, LLP
Is it better to ask for a gift from a business or from the business owner?  How can a charitable lead trust or charitable remainder trust help transfer a business to the second generation?  Why would a charity want to accept a gift of an interest in a closely held business?  What can the charity expect when receiving a gift of a business interest as a beneficiary of an estate or trust?  Do appraisals really matter?  This will be a meaty session for non-profit and for-profit planned giving professionals.

March 2, 2010 – Brown Bag – NEW format-members only
Mr. Bill Moran, President, The Moran Company
The original idea for this program was to allow members to mentor each other.  The new format will be facilitated by Bill Moran, a senior planned giving professional.  You come with your ideas and/or challenges and Bill will offer guidance and ideas.  Bill will be there at subsequent sessions to review results, reinforce new practices and share ideas.  Your membership is the cost of this quality mentoring.  Location and time for all Brown Bag sessions will be announced soon.

March 17, 2010 – Virtual Seminar – 12:00-1:30pm
Bequest Boot Camp—Ten Exercises to Strengthen Your Bequest Program
Like a boot camp fitness class, this session is based upon the principles of discipline, motivation, and teamwork. We’ll cover ten exercises that can boost your bequest program. The exercises were inspired by gift planners across the country in areas such as bequest messaging, legacy society recognition and asking for early distributions from estates. Bequest programs require a commitment over a long horizon and should include quick bursts of energy, strength and agility, and a gentle stretching of our minds. Learn new tips to ensure your organization maximizes the revenue from bequests, the foundation of gift planning.
Karen Gallardo serves as senior director of gift planning and major gifts for the AARP Foundation

March 19, 2010 – Making Beneficiary Designations Work
We work hard to help our clients and donors complete their estate plan.  But that does not mean the gift put in place through an estate plan will ever happen.  Correct titling of assets and completion of beneficiary designations are critical to a successful estate plan.  Gifting through beneficiary designations is simple, may have a tax advantage, and is easy for our donors to complete.  We need to know how to help our clients and donors make the best gift possible.

April 16, 2010 – Tax Update
David Watkins, Slagle, Bernard & Gorman, PC
What does the future hold?  What legislation is pending or signed into law for 2010?  If Congress has taken no action, what will happen?  Join us for this unpredictable session.

May 12, 2010 – Virtual Seminar – 12:00-1:30pm
Charitable Gift Annuity Reinsurance: What It Is, What It Isn’t, When It Works and When It Doesn’t
Gift annuity reinsurance has long been a misunderstood topic. Life insurance companies suggest reinsuring everything. Investment managers suggest reinsuring nothing. Like most things in life, there is a prudent middle-ground. Charities have never been so concerned about gift annuity pools and are exploring every possible option for risk management. This session will help attendees better understand what reinsurance can and can’t do to mitigate risk. Case studies will be used to answer most of the frequently asked reinsurance questions.
Bryan Clontz, CFP®, CLU, ChFC, AEP, CAP, serves as the president and co-founder of Charitable Solutions, LLC

Kansas City is a very charitable community.  The economic events of 2008 and 2009 have affected our charitable community and not all non-profits survived.  Come hear how charitable giving was affected, current trends in the charitable community, and how to position your business or organization for a changing community of donors.
